In the wake of natural disasters, satellite images are able to provide information about the state of the ground, providing valuable information to assist response efforts. Telespazio VEGA seeks to provide support and reliable infrastructures in case of natural or man-made disaster (earthquake, volcano, flooding and landslides) through rapid mapping that provides damage assessment of the affected area.
COSMO-SkyMed is the ideal instrument due to the rapid response given by the short revisit time of the constellation and the reliability of data collection (not subject to scene illumination and cloud coverage). Damage assessment can be carried out using archive data over the same area, using both SAR and optical imagery.
Specific applications within our capabilities include mapping flood extents, detecting collapsed buildings and structures after earthquakes and mapping ground movement after landslides.
